Revolution Fall to Junior Flyers in First Battle of the Philadelphias

WARMINSTER, PA - The Eastern Hockey League Philadelphia Revolution (1-3-1-0) fell to the visiting Philadelphia Junior Flyers (1-0-0-0) at The Rink at Warwick by a 4-3 score.

"I thought the Junior Flyers played a very good game," said Revolution Head Coach James Laux.  "They did a good job handling us in our own net.  I thought we played good defensively but we were unable to make plays in our defensive zone when we won the puck on the face-off.  We need to be able to play less in our zone so we can play the puck in the other end."

Trailing by two goals in the third period, the Revolution fought back with a power play goal by Ken Tencza at the 5:44 mark to make it 3-2.  After the Junior Flyers increased their lead back to two on a Jeffery Beck breakaway goal, captain Riley Egan answered back with a goal of his own with under two minutes remaining.  

"Despite the score," said Laux, "we fought back.  We still, however, need to capitalize on those big opportunities that could've been the game changer."  

Revolution forward Zachary England scored his first goal in the EHL with three minutes remaining in the first period to tie the game at one.  Goaltender Jacob Caffrey received the loss in net, stopping 35 of 39 shots.  

Scoring for the visiting Junior Flyers were Beck and Thomas Crabtree with two goals apiece.  Goaltender Tommy Bay earned the win in net with 23 saves.

Offensive Outburst Leads EHL Revolution to First Win of Season

WARMINSTER, PA - The Philadelphia Revolution earned their first win in the Eastern Hockey League Saturday night at home against the Washington Junior Nationals seven to one.  

"For a young team," said Revolution Head Coach James Laux, "they played pretty maturely.  They worked very hard defensively and offensively.  We needed offense, and everyone was able to contribute to all seven goals scored."

Revolution forward Ken Tencza led the Revolution offensive outburst with a hat trick and two assists.  

"It feels good to score three goals," said Tencza, "even after I had trouble scoring in the first couple of games.  Now, I see them coming in bunches.  My goal moving forward is to stay consistent with my gameplay."    

Joining Tencza on the scoreboard were Riley Egan and Nick Patullo with two goals apiece.  Assisting on the seven goals were forwards Josh Williams, Remington Woods, and Zachary England; and defensemen Dennis Maier, Ryan O'Malley, and Nick Schaefer.

"I think we were a little more confident tonight," said Egan.  "Our offensive production really helped out in strengthening us as a team."

Jacob Caffrey earned the win in net, stopping 24 of 25 shots.

Junior Nationals forward Mike Piccirilli scored the lone goal for his team at 14:28 in the first period to tie the game at one.  Goaltender Timothy Cooney received the loss, despite stopping 51 of 58 shots.

EHL Revolution vs. Washington Jr. Nationals Game Preview: September 28, 2013

WARMINSTER, PA - The Eastern Hockey League Philadelphia Revolution (0-2-1-0) will host the Washington Junior Nationals (1-1-0-0) tonight at The Rink at Warwick at 7:30 PM.  

This will be the first of six meetings against their South Division rivals.  Tonight's game will also be the first time the Revolution face a member of the former Atlantic Junior Hockey League in their home venue.

"It's always exciting to play a division rival at home," said Revolution Head Coach James Laux.  "We are excited to play and hungry for a win."

The Revolution come into this game still searching for their first win in the EHL.  The team earned its first point in the standings on the road last weekend in a scoreless tie against the Walpole Express.  

"Our defense is becoming more responsible with the puck and helping our goalies," said Coach Laux.  "Our focus right now is getting the puck in the net and getting more comfortable offensively."

Revolution vs. Express Game Preview: September 22, 2013

WARMINSTER, PA - The Eastern Hockey League Philadelphia Revolution (0-2-0-0) hit the road for Walpole, Massachusetts to take on the Express (1-1-0-0) this Sunday, September 22nd, at 2:30 PM. 

This will be the first of two meeting between the clubs this season, as well as the first time they meet in each franchise's history.   

"Walpole has always been a high end Atlantic Junior Hockey League team and had a great reputation as an organization," said Revolution Head Coach James Laux.  "We have prepared for them as we would any other team and expect them to be every bit as good as the competition we played against last weekend."

The Revolution head north looking for their first win of the season and in the EHL.  Last weekend, the club lost to the Boston Bandits and New Hampshire Junior Monarchs by a combined thirteen to three score.  

"After the losses," said Laux, "the number one focus for us was working on our defensive zone play with and without the puck.  Also, the coaching staff and I expect our returning forwards Riley Egan, Ken Tencza, James Wallace, and Kyle Jennings to stand out offensively and have defensemen Ryan O'Malley and Nick Schaefer anchor the blue line."

From the Man Who Calls It As He Sees It: An Overview of The Revolution's First Weekend in the Eastern Hockey League

In their first weekend in the Eastern Hockey League, the Philadelphia Revolution dropped two straight contests to the Boston Bandits and the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs by the respective scores of 8-3 and 5-0.

Revolution fans may look at this past weekend as a need for improvement in a lot of areas of their game.  As for me, I look at this weekend as a sign of great things to come.

From what I've seen while calling the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs contest back on  September 14th, this team has a lot of potential to make an immediate impact in this league.  Right now, they are working on the kinks; but, there are some current upsides to their game that will do nothing but continue to strengthen as the season progresses.  Those areas are their goaltending and penalty kill.

Despite the 13 goals he allowed, goaltender James Caffrey made some incredible saves to keep his team in each game.  The majority of the goals he allowed were due to deflections in front of the net, rebounds, or quick turnovers in the team's defensive zone.  Still, the 42 shots allowed per game and 71 combined saves show that he will do whatever it takes to maintain the team's competitive nature.

The team's penalty kill was also strong this past weekend, allowing only two goals in 13 short-handed situations.  The effort did not only come from the net minder, but also from the unit's strong defensive efforts.  There was never a time where the Revolution was caught not blocking shots, using their sticks, and trying to neutralize the opposition's offense.

From now until their next game, there is only one major area where the Revolution needs to improve: capitalizing on their high quality chances.  Of the 65 shots they fired on net, only three resulted in a goal.  The chemistry is there to increase their goal totals, but it is all contingent on the appropriate time to shoot and pass the puck.

Revolution Falls to Junior Monarchs in EHL Home Opener

WARMINSTER, PA - The Eastern Hockey League Philadelphia Revolution fell to the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs on Saturday night by a five to zero score.

"A five-nothing score does not tell the true tale of the game today," said Revolution Head Coach James Laux.  "We played a power house in the Junior Monarchs and realize now what it takes to win in this league.  Moving forward, we need to work on our defense by getting everybody more well adjusted to their positions and continue to work on our offense to help the goalies get more goal support."

Revolution goaltender Jacob Caffrey earned the loss in today's contest, stopping 31 of 36 shots.  

"Giving up five goals is never fun," said Caffrey,  "especially when they are scored on turnovers.  Turnovers are all a part of the game, and we got to anticipate them.  Moving forward, we need to have better on-ice communication for when they happen."

Despite the loss, the coaching staff was impressed with the goaltender's performance. 

"Caffrey has been good for us," said Laux.  "He made some huge saves to keep us in the game.  He faced over 80 shots this weekend and made a great effort defending against every single one."

The Revolution penalty kill also performed well tonight, allowing one goal in seven Junior Monarchs power play opportunities.  The special teams unit improve to 11 for 13 on the penalty kill.

Junior Monarchs' forward Hunter Laslo scored twice for his club, with Eric Berglund, Cameron Spicer, and Oleg Hayduk scoring one goal apiece.  Goaltender Jake Theut earned the shutout win, stopping all 27 shots he faced.

EHL Revolution vs. Jr. Monarchs Game Preview: September 14th at 7:55 PM

WARMINSTER, P.A. - The Philadelphia Revolution (0-1-0) will host the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs (0-1-0) tonight at The Rink at Warwick at 7:55 PM.

This will be the first of two meetings between the former Eastern Junior Hockey League clubs this year.  Last season, the Revolution were swept by the Monarchs in the season series three games to none.

"The key in this game is to neutralize the Junior Monarchs offense," said EHL Revolution Head Coach James Laux.  "To shut down a team like New Hampshire, we need to make sure that we always have men back in the defensive zone to prevent any odd man rushes and have our offense maintain consistent control the puck in the offensive zone."

The Revolution are looking to bounce back after an eight to three loss to the Boston Bandits yesterday afternoon.  Scoring for the team was forwards Steve Atkinson, James Wallace, and Chris Connor, with defenseman Ryan O'Mally assisting on two shots.

"Despite the loss," said Laux, "this game was a great learning experience for all of us.  We have a very young and aggressive and anxious team.  I think that we were a little too aggressive in yesterdays game,  and the Bandits were able to capitalize on that.  Moving forward, we need to focus on cutting down the high quality scoring chances by the opposition."

Originally, the Revolution and the Jr. Monarchs were scheduled to play this contest at Middletown Ice World in Middletown, New Jersey; however, due to last-minute scheduling conflicts, the game was moved to The Rink at Warwick.
